Year 1

In January, the school was closed following government guidelines in response to COVID-19. Our remote education is now in place (more information can be found in the remote learning tab). The remote education will follow our curriculum as close as possible. Below is the intended learning for Spring term which will be closely mirrored in our remote education.

This term year one will be exploring the themes of social justice. We will be focussing the elderly and how we can show an impact in our community, we are also looking at changes in technology over time and how this has changed the generation today.

Our core text this term is ‘Up’ by Disney Pixar. The film centres on an elderly widower named Carl Fredrickson and an earnest boy named Russell. By tying thousands of balloons to his house, Carl sets out to fulfil his dream to see the wilds of South America and complete a promise made to his late wife, Ellie. But, complications affect his trip where the young boy Russell joins him on his adventure. This focuses on the themes of isolation.  the story shows us that it’s easy to become isolated and sad when you’ve lost the things and people you love. But in Up, Carl isn’t just a hero; he’s an adventurer. Sure, he’s more than a little bit surly, but he uses that old man license to his advantage. when his friends are threatened, he’s not afraid to become a hero.  Our core text will influence us to write a setting description as our final outcome, which will encourage us to build on our skills of writing captions using a variety of vocabulary to describe and creating story maps.

In maths this half term our focus will be on position and direction and time. We will be using positional language to describe objects placement. We will be learning and applying key vocabulary including ‘above, ‘below, ‘beside, and, ‘between.’. We will also continue to develop our number bonds to 20. We will then explore time, where we will be problem solving around months and days of week and months of the year. We will then be making time to half past on mechanical clocks.

Our curriculum lessons will have a History focus, where we will be learning about how technology has changed over time. We will look how this has changed for our past generations to today. In PE we will be doing gymnastics. In Art, we will be focusing on the work of Banksy. We will then create an outcome using marbling and splatter painting ng.  In Science, we will be recognizing and describing common plants. Whilst exploring how we know they are edible and inedible. We will then grow our own plant and watch how it changes over time.  Our RE this term will be focussing on explore and discuss how Hindus worship.

In Year 1, our reading books will be changed every day. Parents can support their children's learning through reading and discussing the books daily, recording in reading journals and by giving children the opportunity to visit the local library to read about and research our topics. We will also be sending out spellings and phonics or maths related activities on a Friday, which are due the following Wednesday. Additionally, there will be a variety of homework activities to choose from at the start of the term relating to our overarching theme of social justice.
